Saudi Arabia Wants To Be Top Tourism Destination For Muslim Travelers

Alicia Buller

Saudi Arabia wants to be the top global destination for Muslim tourists by the end of the decade according to a top official.

It comes amid a massive push to develop the Kingdom's Red Sea coastline and maximize tourism spending among the millions of Muslims who already visit the Kingdom each year as part of Hajj and Umrah.

"We want to beat Dubai, Malaysia and Turkey to the top spot," said a senior official at the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCNH) in an interview on the sidelines of the World Travel Market in London.

"We have different projects in the pipeline and we are developing our pilgrimage sites. We are opening up our historical sites, we have five UNESCO sites and we are aiming to have 10 by 2020.

"We have everything in Saudi. Our history gives us competitive advantage. We have a beautiful natural landscape and thousands of years of Islamic and pre-Islamic history. We are open to all," said the spokesman.

"For Muslims, we have the advantage that everything is already halal here."

What The Helicopter Accident Tells Us About Saudi Arabia

By Emre Gönen

News has been pouring in with unexpected speed and importance: Dozens of high-ranking officials have been sacked, a ballistic missile was fired upon Riyadh from Yemen unsuccessfully, and it was the first attack over the Saudi Arabia capital.

A Saudi helicopter crashed near the kingdom's southern border with Yemen. The accident claimed the lives of a dozen high-ranking administrators, including the son of the former intelligence chief and Crown Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz, who is second in line for the succession of King Salman. He probably won't keep this status for a very long time in the huge Saudi royal family with its complex network of competing factions. His son, Prince Mansour bin Muqren, who lost his life in the helicopter accident, was the deputy governor of the Asir province.

Pakistani And Asian Journal: Which Islam Are We Talking About?

By Saeed Qureshi

I am not an Islamic scholar but I can quote three Suras from Quran that explicitly emphasize Muslims all over the world as one united and monolithic fraternity. In one Sura it is stated that "all the Muslim believers are brothers"

In another Ayah it is ordained to "hold fast to the rope of Allah and not to fall into divisions or sects". Yet in another Ayah it is decreed that to kill a human being is to kill the entire humanity. There should be another one that stipulates that a Muslim cannot kill a fellow Muslim believer.

The above quoted Suras and their contents look frivolous and useless when we delve into the history of Muslims and also look around us in the present times. Ever since the demise of the holy prophet Muhammad (SAWS) some 1475 years ago, the Muslims have been killing fellow Muslims on racial, regional and sectarian grounds. Banu Hashim the clans of Prophet Muhammad were sidelined by the shrewder Umayyads who took the reins of the caliphate barely after 30 years or so. Three caliphs died at the hand of the assassins.

Pakistani Politics: Bilawal Bhutto Is Too Naive To Lead PPP

By Saeed Qureshi

The political parties in Pakistan are like family fiefdoms that keep ruling and delving in the arena of politics and power as long as they can hold on. There are scores of political parties in Pakistan and it is seldom that they are headed or presided over by someone who was not from the founders' clan.

In Pakistan, the tradition of electing the head of a political party has been invariably nonexistent. Even if the elections within the parties are held, a person from the family of the founders' wins. There could be exceptions as in case of Jamaat-e-Islami or the Awami National Party.

Presently there are five main political parties in Pakistan. Besides there are 31 regional or minor parties. These five main political parties are PML (Nawaz Sharif), PTI (Imran Khan), PPP (Bilawal Bhutto), Awami National Party (Asfandyar Wali Khan) and Pakistan Awami Tehrik (Muhammad Tahirul Qadri). All these are being run by the founders or the family of the founders. It shows that these parties don't hold party elections to elect a more senior or deserving person if not related to the founder or his clan.

Would Kashmir Dispute Never be Resolved!

By Saeed Qureshi

India and Pakistan have been dueling with each other since 1947 for accession or occupation of disputed territories in Kashmir Valley. Ever-since both are stuck up along the Line of Control and may remain so in the future as well. The Kashmiri nation is ethnically and religiously different from India. Kashmiris cannot freely travel across the Indian border as they can do along the Pakistani borders.

India makes a legal clam for her occupation of the disputed territories in Kashmir by citing the agreement reached with the Dogra Monarch Hari Singh ruling Kashmir at the time of partition. Pakistan's claim on Kashmir is based upon the partition formula stipulating that the majority of the religious population would be basic criterion for a state to join either India or Pakistan.

In simple terms, it means Muslims majority areas to join Pakistan and the Hindus majority areas with India. Because of the unrelenting insurgency and continuous internal unrest in the Indian occupied part of Kashmir, India started deploying security forces through 1990s under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) that continue to remain camped on the Indian side of Kashmir ever since. Lately their number has reached 700,000. This is the highest number of armed forces deployment by any country in the post-world war in the disputed territories.

Imran Khan's Speech in Hyderabad Sindh was Impressive

Imran Khan the mercurial yet inimitable chairman of the political party "Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf" (PTI) is emerging as front-line confident leader as borne out by his speech in Hyderabad city of the Sindh province. The public meeting was certainly huge despite being far from his home turf in Punjab or in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province. It demonstrates that the PTI could be gaining ground in Sindh which primarily has been, a political haven for the PPP and MQM all these years.

In his speech, Imran Khan stated that one of the PTI's political opponent Mian Nawaz Sharif has been disqualified and had to leave the slot of the prime minister because of PTI pursuit of corruption case against him in courts. He announced that PTI was going to do the same about Zardari; the co-chairperson of the PPP. By directly addressing Zardari He thundered that, ""After Nawaz we are coming after you" who in his reckoning was the "biggest problem of Sindh". It is quite candid that Imran is also going to launch an anti- Zardari campaign both politically and through the judicial and legal channels.

UAE says Iran is aiming for Arab 'chaos': U.A.E. crackdown on Iranian regime in Sharjeh

The National

The UAE's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Anwar Gargash has accused Iran of trying to push Arab states into 'a descent into chaos.'

Both the UAE and the region should stand together to resist foreign interference in the domestic affairs of Arab countries.

Dr Gargash restated the UAE's commitment to resolving the crisis in Yemen, where Houthi rebels backed by Iran seized the capital Sanaa in 2015. The UAE is part of the Saudi-led coalition to restore the country's legitimate government.

The cabinet ministers of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani received a confidence vote recently in this regime’s parliament. 16 out of 17 ministers were approved after many reports indicated Rouhani reviewed the list extensively with Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

However, an evaluation of this slate of names proves this cabinet will render no alternations and represents the very impasse the entire regime is facing. The next four years will, in fact, be worse than the previous.

Mohammad Javad Zarif has retained his post as foreign minister, considering his role in negotiating the nuclear agreement with the P5+1, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

407,000 Pilgrims Leave Saudi Arabia After Performing Hajj

Mohammed Al-Sulami

The number of pilgrims who have left the Kingdom reached more than 400,000 as of Saturday, the General Directorate of Passports said.

"The total departures were 407,220 pilgrims. Pilgrims who left via land crossings reached 42,893; 359,508 departed from airports and 4,819 through sea ports," the directorate added.

The directorate told pilgrims that leaving before their Hajj visa expires after performing their pilgrimage "avoids penalties prescribed by law." Pilgrims were also warned not to travel outside Makkah, Jeddah and Madinah.

The directorate said companies providing services to pilgrims must not delay in reporting any pilgrims who overstay. "This delay may cause these companies to be subject to the prescribed penalties."

Iran And The Nuclear Deal's Future: Iran Secret, Unannounced And Illegal Uranium Enrichment

Heshmat Alavi

Forbes

It has been over a week since a new round of tension has initiated over the Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This string of developments were kick-started with a meeting between Nikki Haley, United States Ambassador to the United Nations, and Yukio Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The fact that Washington suddenly sought a meeting with the chief of the UN nuclear watchdog and launched an emphasis on inspections of Iran’s military sites has raised eyebrows.

In retaliation, Iran vowed no access to its military sites, prompting Haley’s reaction in saying such an approach by Tehran will severely jeopardize its future compliance with the JCPOA. And despite the IAEA issuing a quarterly report confirming Iran’s compliance with the deal terms, Amano on Thursday “rejected Tehran’s claim that its military sites were off-limits to inspection…,” according to the Associated Press.

Erdoğan Accuses Myanmar Of 'Genocide' As Thousands Of Rohingya Flee To Bangladesh

Almost 400 people have died in violence that Myanmar's military said was triggered by attacks on security forces by Rohingya insurgents

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has accused Myanmar of "genocide" against the Rohingya Muslim minority, who have fled in the tens of thousands across the border into Bangladesh to escape ethnic violence.

"There is a genocide there," Erdoğan said in a speech in Istanbul during the Islamic Eid al-Adha feast, which commemorates Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son.

"Those who close their eyes to this genocide perpetuated under the cover of democracy are its collaborators."

Almost 400 people have died in violence in the north-western Rakhine state that Myanmar's military said was triggered by attacks on security forces by insurgents from the Rohingya ethnic minority.

The army's statement said there had been 90 armed clashes, including an initial 30 attacks by insurgents on 25 August, making the combat more extensive than previously announced. The army, responding to the attacks, launched what it called clearance operations against the insurgents.

Advocates for the Rohingya say security forces and vigilantes attacked and burned villages, shooting civilians and causing others to flee. Hundreds of civilians were killed, they say, posting photos, videos and details on social media as evidence.

World's Silence On Myanmar Violence Against Rohingyas 'A Portrait Of Shame': Presidential Aide

The international community has the responsibility to come up with a long-term solution to the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar's western state of Rakhine, presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalın said on Friday.

"Turkey will continue to maintain its constructive and determined attitude for a solution," Kalın said in a Twitter post.

He called "the world's silence" in the face of the persecution of Rohingya Muslims by security forces of the southeast Asian country "a portrait of shame."

Turkey is continuing its "intensive efforts and initiatives at every level to end the humanitarian tragedy" in Rakhine, according to the president's aide.

He noted that Turkish humanitarian aid agencies, including the Turkish Red Crescent, Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), and Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), are involved in these efforts.

Turkish authorities are also in contact with authorities in Myanmar and Bangladesh -- where thousands of Rohingya have fled -- to supply humanitarian aid to the Rohingya people, Kalın stressed.

'Racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism or Islamophobia are poisoning our societies' – UN chief

16 August 2017 – Urging people everywhere to speak out against hate speech and hate crimes, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today reiterated his call for tolerance, respect for the other and the importance of recognizing diversity.

"Racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism or Islamophobia are, as I mentioned yesterday, poisoning our societies," the Secretary-General told journalists today at a briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York.

"It is absolutely essential for us all to stand up against them everywhere and every time," he added.

Addressing questions from a journalist about the situation in the US, where a weekend protest and counter-protest over the removal of a Civil War statue in Charlottesville, Virginia, sparked discussions about race, Mr. Guterres said "these demons are appearing a little bit everywhere."

A Portuguese national, Mr. Guterres said that as a European, he is proud that Europe created the values of Enlightenment: tolerance, the respect for the other, and the importance of recognition of diversity.

Before Anyone Further Appeases Iran...

Forbes, August 16, 2017 - The pro-Iran deal camp is recently making much noise about how the Trump administration and critics of the pact, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), are making rightful complaints of the text failing to address Iran's destructive belligerence in the Middle East.

These are valid concerns, considering the fact that even if the deal remains intact come October's decision by President Donald Trump to find Iran in compliance or not, the mullahs are hell-bent to continue wreaking havoc and expanding influence across the region.

The pro-Iran deal camp claim Washington has no evidence to hold Tehran in violation of the JCPOA terms. Not true.

. Tehran has exceeded its heavy water production cap, necessary for a plutonium nuclear bomb,
s. testing more advanced centrifuges,
. illicitly procuring highly sensitive nuclear and ballistic missile technology in Germany, according to Berlin's intelligence services,
. surpassing its uranium enrichment cap, another key non-compliance factor

Rohingya Muslims: The World's Most Persecuted Minority – UN

1.3 million Rohingya Muslims, who have been living in Myanmar (Formerly Burma) for generations, are one of the world's most persecuted minorities, according to the United Nations. They have been facing intense discrimination, repression and violence. They have been subjected to all kinds of human rights abuses, including 'killing men, shooting them, slaughtering children, raping and sexually assaulting women and girls, burning and looting houses, forcing these people to cross river'. Human rights groups said Myanmar government pursuing these oppression which could amount to "crimes against humanity", "ethnic cleansing" and the treatment of Rohingya Muslims by the Myanmar could be tantamount to crimes against humanity. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said in a huge rally at Kuala Lumpur stadium on 4th of December that international action should be taken to stop what he called genocide of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi, said in an interview in 2013 to BBC interviewer Mishal Husain that "Muslims have been targeted but Buddhists have also been subjected to violence." Referring to the above interview and saying, Mehdi Hasan observed, "Yet in Myanmar, it isn't Buddhists who have been confined to fetid camps, where they are "slowly succumbing to starvation, despair and disease.".

A SYDNEY school has adopted a policy allowing Muslim schoolboys to refuse to shake hands with women

At a recent awards ceremony at Hurstville Boys Campus of Georges River College, female presenters were told by one of the two principals that some students would not shake their hands because of their Muslim faith, The Australian reported.

The boys were instead permitted to place a hand across their chest to show they would not be taking the hand of the women, many of them well-known figures from the local community.

A spokesman from the NSW Department of Education said this was an "agreed protocol" developed after extensive consultation with staff, parents and boys at the small, diverse public school of 354 students from year 7-10.

"At the school's 2016 presentation day, the principal explained to invited guests making awards that some Muslim students may place their hand across their chest instead of shaking hands," the spokesman said.

Rohingya Suffer "Unspeakable Cruelty" Because Of "Muslim Faith"

The Rohingya suffered for decades under a brutal military regime in Myanmar, and now despite a "democratically" elected civilian government headed by so-called "human rights icon" Aung San Suu Kyi, the "slow-burning" genocide (as one Burmese scholar described it several years ago) has accelerated.

Since October, the Burmese military has been conducting a horrific "clearance operation" targeting the Rohingya that has displaced nearly 100,000. Reports and action alerts by rights groups, Rohingya activists and media organizations have been sounding the alarm to war crimes and crimes against humanity for years now. These calls while gaining some attention have failed to garner the requisite awareness in proportion to the magnitude of the issue; it often gets swept under the carpet.

The UN recently published the most damning and devastating report on the Myanmar military's crimes against Rohingya that I have ever read. The response has been one of categorical dismay from many who were unaware of the Rohingya cause.

The flash report – released today by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) based on its interviews with people who fled Myanmar after attacks on a border post in early October, the ensuing counter military operations and a lockdown in north Maungdaw – documents mass gang-rape, killings, including of babies and young children, brutal beatings, disappearances and other serious human rights violations by the country's security forces.

Muslim Celebs Explain Why A Religion Of 1.7 Billion Can't Be Reduced To Stereotypes

Common media representations and political rhetoric would have us believe that the roughly 1.7 billion Muslims on the globe are a homogenous, monolithic group. And this couldn't be further from the truth.

In the latest episode of "The Secret Life of Muslims," a web series directed by Joshua Seftel and featured on Vox, 15 prominent Muslim Americans explain why no single definition of what it means to be Muslim can account for all 1.7 billion faithful.

The episode features Aman Ali, Wajahat Ali, Amani Al-Khatahtbeh, Reza Aslan, Negin Farsad, Mona Haydar, Maz Jobrani, Ibtihaj Muhammad, Zahra Noorbakhsh, Omar Regan, Sebastian Robins, Linda Sarsour, Layla Shaikley, Dena Takruri, and Iqbal Theba.

"The ISIS-salute" Demystified

ISIS and other political extremist groups are often seen holding one finger, the index finger in the air. That they have chosen the pointed finger as a political symbol, is undoubtedly true. But does that mean that all that are pointing fingers in the air are members of ISIS? And are all Muslims that ever raise their index finger dangerous terrorists?

First of all I would encourage you to use Google. Pointing with index fingers is not uncommon. When you point at something you want to direct people's attention to something. Pointing up in the air is a variation of that. In the European and American cultures we do it all the time. When you watch sports on TV you see it all the time. It symbolizes "I am number one", "I am the winner".

Soccerplayers often show the indexfinger after scoring a goal.

When you watch athletics you see it all the time.

Martin Luther King frequently pointed fingers. He pointed AT the racists challenging them and he pointed up in the when he said that mankind is ONE. I am from Sweden. Here different organizations for decades have used the symbol "pointing an index finger up in the air" when fighting racism. The symbolic meaning is the same as for King: "unity, mankind is one". Last year racists spread articles about a Swedish TV show where children raised their finger. The "ISIS-Salute" some Islamophobes claimed.

Are Muslims Rapists?

Hatred against Jews and hatred against Muslims have a lot in common. One thing in particular is that throughout history Jews and Muslims have been accused of being rapists. The Nazis in the 30's were well known for their claim that Jewish men seek to rape "Aryan women and small girls" to "make Europe more Jewish." The myth that all Jewish men are rapists is still being spread among antisemites. Today Muslims are victims of this slander as well.

The internet is filled with claims that Muslims rape women. The website close to President Donald Trump, Breitbart, is no exception to that. Breitbart often claims that Muslim men are sexual perverts that just want to rape women.

Milo Yiannopoulos, senior editor at Breitbart, stated;

Women will suffer terrible sexual atrocities at the hands of Muslims, but they will survive these encounters most of the time. Muslims want to violate women, not kill them."

White Terrorists Planned Attack On Somali Muslim Immigrants

Kansas Terrorists Wanted Anti-Muslim Attack to End in "Bloodbath"

They called themselves the "Crusaders" and had a clear purpose: launch an attack against Muslims that would lead to a "bloodbath." With any luck that would help spark a religious war. But their plans were thwarted as three Kansas men were arrested on Friday for planning an attack on a Garden City, Kansas, apartment complex filled with Somali immigrants that is also home to a mosque. They planned to carry out the attack one day after the November election.

"They discussed obtaining four vehicles, filling them with explosives and parking them at the four corners of the apartment complex to create a large explosion," the Department of Justice said.

"They chose the target location based on their hatred of these groups, their perception that these groups represent a threat to American society, a desire to inspire other militia groups, and a desire to 'wake people up,' " according to the criminal complaint.

SYDNEY (AFP) - A British Muslim cleric who once preached that gays should be put to death has had his Australian visa cancelled and has left the country, with the authorities on Wednesday (June 15) saying it is unlikely he will ever be allowed back.

Farrokh Sekaleshfar was in Sydney as the guest speaker of an Islamic centre for the holy month of Ramadan. But it emerged this week that in a 2013 lecture he suggested that death was a "compassionate" sentence for homosexuals, sparking an outcry in the wake of the Orlando gay nightclub killings.

The government reviewed the decision to let him in, but Sekaleshfar flew out on Tuesday evening just ahead of his visa being revoked. "I made the decision last night to cancel his visa," Immigration Minister Peter Dutton told Sky News.

India Sentences 11 To Life In Prison For Massacre Of Muslims In 2002

The court sentenced 12 other people to seven years in jail for their role in the Gujarat riots that left 69 Muslims dead.

NEW DELHI, June 17 (Reuters) - An Indian court jailed 11 Hindus for life on Friday for the murder of dozens of Muslims during riots in Gujarat in 2002 that shook India at a time Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the state's chief minister.

The court sentenced 12 other people to seven years in jail for arson and other charges during the disturbances, in which 69 Muslims were killed, while another defendant was handed a 10-year sentence, prosecutors said.

The massacre occurred during a series of religious riots that flared for two months in Gujarat and killed more than 1,000 people, most of them Muslims.

The court called the massacre the ''darkest day'' but rejected prosecutors' demand to sentence the defendants to death, after ruling that the attack was not planned.

Dalai Lama Warns Against Scapegoating Muslims After Orlando Shooting

''You cannot generalize,'' said the Tibetan spiritual leader.

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Monday called the massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in which 50 people died, a ''very serious tragedy,'' but said it was wrong to see all Muslims as potential terrorists.

Asked in an interview with Reuters about U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's reiteration of a call after the shooting for a ban on Muslims entering the country, the Dalai Lama said the billionaire businessman was entitled to his opinion.

However, he added that if he had a chance, he would ask Trump ''What's his reason? More detail.''

The Dalai Lama said that in every religious community, including Buddhist ones, ''there are some mischievous people.''

Muslim Ex-Prisoners Say Guards Called Them Terrorists And They Shaved Off Beards 'For Shorter Sentences'

One inmate was asked if his prayer hat was 'a condom'.

A Muslim ex-prisoner says he was regularly called a 'terrorist' by jail staff and viewed with suspicion because of his religion, as a report claims Islamophobia is common in the British justice system.

In a week when calls have been made to prevent radicalisation in prisons in the light of the Brussels attacks, a report claims that young Muslims in Britain's prisons are already viewed with suspicion and treated unfairly.

Suleman Amad, who was sent to prison aged 18, says officers would ''grab'' religious objects in his cell during searches, and saw Muslims as a threat if they prayed in groups.
