OIC Calls For Urgent Action To Save Remaining Islamic Cultural Heritage

EsinIslam And Agencies

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) recently called on member countries for urgent action and appropriate ways of protecting the remaining Islamic cultural heritage against loss and neglect.

OIC Secretary-General Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen made the call during an international conference on "Islamic Action for the Protection of Cultural Heritage" held in Istanbul, Turkey, November 1-2.

In his address, delivered by Mehla Ahmed Talebna, OIC general director of cultural, social and family affairs, Al-Othaimeen also called for adapting these ways through international initiatives and mechanisms for cultural heritage preservation as a whole, and to save and restore endangered heritage in Islamic countries.

He called on participants to develop cultural policies and plans on cultural heritage protection for adoption at the 10th Conference of Ministers of Culture to be organized by the Islamic, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) in Khartoum, Sudan, on November 21-23.

The Real Reasons Trump Is Quitting Unesco

By Jonathan Cook in Nazareth

At first glance, the decision last week by the Trump administration, followed immediately by Israel, to quit the United Nation's cultural agency seems strange. Why penalise a body that promotes clean water, literacy, heritage preservation and women's rights?

Washington's claim that the UN's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) is biased against Israel obscures the real crimes the agency has committed in US eyes.

The first is that in 2011 Unesco became the first UN agency to accept Palestine as a member. That set the Palestinians on the path to upgrading their status at the General Assembly a year later.

It should be recalled that in 1993, as Israel and the Palestinians signed the Oslo accords on the White House lawn, the watching world assumed the aim was to create a Palestinian state.

Taj Mahal, Babri Masjid and UNESCO

By Dr. Ali Al-Ghamdi

The Taj Mahal is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. The emperor had 14 children with his wife who died while giving birth to their 14th child. Feeling sorrowful and distressed, he decided to build this immense mausoleum between 1631 and 1648 to express his immense love for her. The Taj Mahal is considered to be one of the most mesmerizing and breathtakingly beautiful buildings in the world. It is a universal masterpiece and a great architectural achievement.

It is said that over 20,000 workers built it over a period of 22 years. Made of white marble which is decorated with Qur'anic verses and precious stones brought from all over the world, the architecture is truly a wonder in the full sense of the word. Its glamour has remained unchanged for centuries. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization named it a World Heritage Site, and over two million tourists visit it annually. It will always remain one of India's prominent landmarks and its name will always be synonymous with India. Any tourist who visits India will go to the Taj Mahal because a visit to India would not be complete without it.

Depression Doesn't Make You A Bad Muslim: What The Islamic Community Can Do For Mental Health

Sima Barmania

I was raised in a Muslim home in the suburbs of outer London, in a family where religion was always important. As a child I was told that depression was not something faced by Muslims. "Depression doesn't exist in Islam." It was said almost in a chorus by family friends in Muslim communities both at home and abroad; the prevailing consensus was that depression was a Western phenomenon. I was puzzled as to what this actually meant. Did it mean that Muslims were somehow immune from the condition? Such views were perhaps understandable at that point in time given the dearth of information relating to mental health. 'Depression is a Western disease' Years later I heard similar statements, said with greater vehemence—this time not by members of the community, but by a good friend whom I held in great reverence and admiration.

She was intelligent, poised, and well-spoken – a paragon of what a good Muslim should be. "Depression doesn't exist: it's a Western disease, you know", she said during a discussion on Western psychiatry. She said, with unwavering conviction, that "if you followed Islam, you would not be depressed." It was those Muslims who had not fully embraced Islam in their daily life, those weak in their faith (Iman), who were afflicted with a "disease of the heart". The insinuation was that depression was an existential punishment for wrongdoing.

Smartphones, Social Media Transforming Hajj Experience

Mohammed Al-Sulami

Many years ago, the journey to perform Hajj was long and difficult, during which pilgrims would be unable to communicate with their loved ones. But the development of means of communication has enabled pilgrims to not only stay in touch with their families but also with the whole world.

They can now film and photograph their experiences and themselves on mobile phones, and disseminate footage and photos via social media, which is now full of pilgrim selfies, particularly at the holy sites.

In the age of smartphones, social media and live video streaming, it's now also an experience to be shared in real time.

Saudia Ready For Hajj Pilgrims' Return To 100 Destinations

Mahmoud Mourad

Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) has completed preparations for its operational plan to return pilgrims to their respective countries starting Monday.

Saudia Director-General Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser said the airline's services come as part of efforts by government agencies to provide facilities to pilgrims that will allow them perform their rituals with ease.

Saudia transported 470,000 pilgrims to the Kingdom, an increase of 40 percent compared to last year, Al-Jasser said. Flights will depart to more than 100 destinations for the return journey.

Al-Jasser said special services include the option to leave bags at Makkah airport in advance of the departure date, to allow pilgrims more time to perform their rituals, and to help avoid possible delay or congestion at terminals.

Obama's Last Word? New U.S. Army Regulations Will Allow Turbans, Hijabs And Beards

Servicemen and women at the brigade level will now be granted religious accommodations.

Just days into the new year, the U.S. Army has already handed a major victory to religious liberty advocates.

New Army regulations released on Tuesday state that servicemen and women at the brigade level will now be granted religious accommodations to wear turbans, beards, and hijabs in accordance with their faith. The move comes just days after the New York Police Department announced its decision to allow officers to wear turbans and grow beards for religious reasons.

Such accommodations for Army service members were previously made on a case-by-case basis.

This Tween Fashion Brand Just Took A Big Step For Inclusivity

"America's beauty comes from the diversity of its people."

Growing up, Muslim fashion blogger Hassanah El-Yacoubi rarely saw Muslim girls like her represented in major American fashion brands. El-Yacoubi told The Huffington Post that this lack of representation in mainstream fashion campaigns creates an "identity complex" for young American Muslims. Many Muslim teens are balancing the challenges of teenage life with the added stress of having their identity as Americans questioned, and even being bullied because of their faith.

That's why it was especially heartening for the blogger to see Justice, an Ohio-based retail company, reach out to young American Muslims in their latest marketing campaign.

Justice focuses exclusively on fashion for "tween" girls between the ages of 7 and 14. In a recent update to the company's merchandise catalog, the company chose to include a young model wearing a bright blue hijab.

The image is now the brand's cover photo on Facebook and is also featured on Justice's website.

Civil Rights Organizations Urge Muslims To Get To Know Their Rights

With Donald Trump's troubling executive order threatening Muslims and immigrants, time is of the essence.

President Donald Trump is getting one step closer to fulfilling his controversial Muslim ban with an executive order that will restrict Muslim immigration and deny visas to people from countries his administration deems high-risk.

The document, which could still be amended before it's signed, targets citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries: Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Yemen and Iran.

Americans across the country responded to Trump's plans with a #NoBanNoWall campaign on social media. Hundreds more took to the streets of Washington Square Park in New York City to protest the ban.

Protests aide, the news has alarmed the Muslim community, and many are now wondering how the proposed order will directly affect them.

Steve Bannon, Breitbart and ISIS; True Friends Think Alike!

Steve Bannon, Breitbart and ISIS; True Friends Think Alike!

Trump's White House adviser Steve Bannon, and Breitbart, share the same worldview as ISIS and Al Qaeda. According all of them the "Muslims" are at war with the "Christians" and the Western world as a whole. The enemy, all Muslims or all Christians are evil they claim.

Trump's, senior adviser, Steve Bannon, believes that there is a war between Islam and the Christian world. The Muslims hate Christianity, he claims. He also believes that there will be a war between "the Chinese" and the U.S.A. within a few years. The reason is that the Chinese, too, fear Christianity.

"You have an expansionist Islam and you have an expansionist China," he claims. "They are motivated. They're arrogant. They're on the march. And they think the Judeo-Christian west is on the retreat… The one thing the Chinese fear more than America … they fear Christianity more than anything." (source)

The Muslims wants to de-christianize the USA, conquer it and turn it into "Islamic States of America." That was the topic of a proposed movie he wrote the manuscript for in 2007. This is something he has repeated often in his speeches. The "Christian West" is in "war" and "struggle against Islam".

Loose Canon: Assimilation threatens the existence of other cultures

Loose Canon: Assimilation threatens the existence of other cultures

This week a doctor from north London was telling me about one of his patients, a lad of 20 who has lived in the borough of Hackney all his life. He was born here and grew up here. And he's a bright boy – yet he speaks only a few very rudimentary words of English. The language he speaks at home and at school is Yiddish. Some may be appalled by the insularity of the community in which this young man was raised. But I admire it. In particular, I admire the resilience of a community that seeks to maintain its distinctiveness and recognises, quite rightly, that assimilation into the broader culture would mean the gradual dilution, and the eventual extinction, of its own way of life. It is no surprise to me that the ultra orthodox are thriving, with high birth rates and predictions that they will be constitute a majority of the Jewish population within 20 years. They have refused assimilation.

It adds immeasurably to the richness and diversity of how life is apprehended that not everyone sees the world in the same way. It is mind-expanding to be challenged by those who commit to another way of life. What a miserably grey one-dimensional place it would be if the dominant model of middle-of-the-road liberal secular capitalism became the only acceptable way of living.

Louise Casey published her community report this week. "As a nation we have lost sight of our expectations on integration and lacked confidence in promoting it," she says. We must do more to challenge "regressive, divisive and harmful cultural and religious practices". As you might imagine, Nigel Farage loved it. "Excellent report out by Dame Louise Casey. Much of what I have been saying for years," he tweeted.

Amazon Tackles Islamophobia In Heartwarming Christmas Ad

A good reminder that we all have more in common than meets the eye.

Amazon chose to highlight a moment of friendship between a Christian and a Muslim in its Christmas advertisement this year ― and it's exactly the kind of interfaith solidarity the world needs to focus on right now.

Amidst reports that Islamophobia is on the rise in the United Kingdom and the United States, the online retail giant launched an advertising campaign on Wednesday that promotes the message that you don't need to follow the same religion to be a good friend to your neighbor.

In the ad, an imam pays a visit to his pal, who happens to be a priest. The pair catch up and joke about the aches and pains of old age. At the end of the visit, both coincidentally decide to purchase the same gift online for each other ― kneepads that help them kneel while they pray.

Hopes And Fears For 2017

Hopes And Fears For 2017

2016 was a monumental year. It gave us some unforgettable memories: the Queen turned 90; Pope Francis met with the Eastern Orthodox Church leader for the first time after 1,000 years, the Coalition forces recaptured some of the territories occupied by ISIS, NASA placed a spacecraft into Jupiter's orbit, 300 African communities pledged to end FGM, Pokťmon Go excitement swept the nation, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar, underdogs Leicester City won the Premier League title, London elected its first Muslim mayor and Team GB provided stunning performance in Olympic Games and Paralympics.

But it was a year defined by political turmoil, challenging the status quo and near-global discord. It was also a year when bigotry and prejudice won over economic policies and diplomacy; exaggerated fear of immigration threw away the biblical concept of 'welcoming strangers', the establishment was defeated by outsiders with no solid policies. Most shocking of all was the brutal murder of Jo Cox MP - a wonderful humanitarian who had championed the cause of the vulnerable and disenfranchised.

In 2016, the terrorist attacks also continued to cause bloodshed and chaos around the globe. Precious lives were snatched away from us in Batley, Istanbul, Brussels, Nice, Orlando, Quetta and many countries around the world.

Flemming Rose Denounces Steve Bannon

"What baffled me the most, in our conversation, was that Bannon apparently believed that war can have a cleansing effect: that we need to tear down things from time to time to rebuild it from scratch… He believed that there is no way we can avoid an armed conflict, if Europe is to be saved. It cant be stopped by peaceful means. We are at war with Islam…" (Steve Bannon to Flemming Rose)

Flemming Rose was one of the editors of Jyllands-posten in 2005, when they published the so called Muhammed Cartoons and is currently a researcher at the CATO institute, in the U.S.A. He wrote an article in the Danish paper Weekendavisen some days ago about that day last fall, when he met Steve Bannon, with the headline "The Revolutionary."

Rose, met Bannon last year in New York while he was slated to meet another individual.

The meeting was not pre-announced, Bannon entered the room unannounced while Flemming spoke to that other person (said individual "was worried about the influence of Islam on the West"). Steve "was somewhat fat, with ruddy face, medium long grey hair, and stubble… He was my age, perhaps a bit older, was barefoot and had his shirt hanging outside his trousers. He introduced himself as Steve, and after a while I realized that his last name was Bannon and that he was the director of Breitbart News," Flemming Rose wrote.

Fox News Still Blaming Moroccan Victim For Quebec Massacre

Fox News, which is essentially a hate organ of the Trump regime at this point is still propagating a horridly deceptive headline that disagrees with their own story claiming that a Moroccan was behind the attacks in Quebec.

The Moroccan man initially described as a suspect by the media is now being treated as a "witness."

At the intercept Glenn Greenwald and Murtaza Hussain reported the wildly inaccurate propaganda of the news media outlets and the false narrative they have been pursuing. Not surprisingly Trump's press secretary also propagated the lie:

Donald Trump Inauguration: Between "Rivers of Blood" And "American Carnage"

I am not teary-eyed at the departure of President Barack Hussein Obama (though it was damned nice to have a US supremo with that middle name) as many lament his exit. I am not going to say goodbye to "America's first Muslim president" with cuddly feelings of warmth, like he was a part of the family. I do understand the angst but cannot partake in the nostalgia or sentimental analysis that doesn't reflect soberly on his track record.

Today is a new day. Gangster-in-chief Trump's proclamations and cabinet picks will translate into a war on minorities: Blacks, Latinos, women, Muslims, Jews and LGBTQ. The appointment of non-experts in positions such as: Secretary of State, Environment, Education, Housing, etc. means the greater decay of these institutions and the USA. He decried the,

"crime and the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential. This American carnage stops right here and stops right now."

What this actually means is a throwback and reinforcement of policies that ravaged Black and Brown communities: the war on drugs, the prison industrial complex, harsh laws for petty offenses, draconian immigration laws, and the militarization of the police. To "bring back the borders" means to separate and divide families, for more immigrants and refugees to die of thirst and starvation in the deserts and wastelands of the Southwest.

No Breitbart, a Muslim mob didn't set fire to Germany's oldest church

Journalists have condemned a report by Breitbart news that claimed a mob of 1,000 men had attacked police and set fire to a church, calling the article a distortion of facts.

Breitbart wrote an article about New Year's Eve in Dortmund on Tuesday with the headline "Revealed: 1,000-man mob attack police, set Germany's oldest church alight on New Year's Eve".

"At New Year's Eve celebrations in Dortmund a mob of more than 1,000 men chanted 'Allahu Akhbar', launched fireworks at police, and set fire to a historic church," the alt-right website reported.

The report was attributed to local news site Ruhr Nachrichten, which fired back on Wednesday, accusing Breitbart of "using our online reports for fake news, hate and propaganda."

In outright defiance of the rising levels anti-Muslim hate in America, University of Michigan students joined forces on Monday to protect their own.

After hearing that a Muslim student had reportedly been threatened for her faith, hundreds of students and faculty showed up to stand guard around classmates who had gathered in a main square to perform one of Islam's five daily prayers.

The public Ishaa prayer, or nighttime prayer, was organized by the university's Muslim Student Association. Club president Farhan Ali, a junior, told The Huffington Post that members of his group wanted to show the campus that they were proud to be Muslim.

Islamophobia and the Ballot Box!
(Story in Full... | More | Want to comment? | Esin )

Islamophobia and the Ballot Box!

American negative attitudes toward Muslims is at an all-time high and the upward trend will continue unabated for the foreseeable future. More alarming is the fact that Islamophobia has met the ballot box, and politicians in the U.S. and Europe have found an easy path to seats of power by creating and riding a Muslim and Islamic fear wave. Fear is an easy commodity to package and sell at every corner to a populace exhausted and beaten down by economic failures, corporate down sizing through outsourcing, massive personal debt, open-ended wars and loss of hope for a better future. At a time when America's corporate elite has wiped out the middle class and managed to create a permanent inequality that has not been seen since the Great Depression, a Muslim boogeyman is the best distraction.

China, Mexican immigrants, African-Americans, women and Muslims o name a few have been assigned responsibility for the collapse of America's middle class and supposedly weakening the country. Trump's ''making America strong again'' is an empty slogan since the real causes for the current state of affairs rest with America's elite and not those being targeted in his racist and xenophobic campaign. The ongoing Republican Party presidential campaign has been reduced to a competition on who can be more racist toward Muslims, tough on immigrants and blaming African-Americans for violence in the inner city. Islamophobia and racism has become the rallying cry for everything that went wrong in America. Overt racism has been awakened anew and making America strong means setting the clock back on civil rights and making religious and racial discrimination acceptable again.

Make Islamophobia a crime says news report

The first edition of the annuall European Islamophobia Report (EIR) is out. It recommends that Islamophobie be recognised as a crime and included in national statistics across Europe.

It is the first to cover a wide range of Eastern European countries like Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, and Latvia. This will enrich the debate on racism in general and Islamophobia in Europe in particular.

The study looks at the employment sector, education, politics, media, internet, the justice system, and networks. Islamophobia works without Muslims, as can be shown by the fact that Islamophobia played a role in the politics of many European countries, which has only a very small Muslim population.

The Truth About Islam - What We Can Learn About Orlando From Muhammad Ali

Islam is a set of religious beliefs held by over 1.6 billion people. These beliefs are not based on fear mongering, persecution, or hatred. Yet we're currently dealing with rampant Islamophobia in the United States, a possible ban on Muslims from entering the country and daily alarmist articles reminding us to fear ISIS.

If we are to understand Islam, we must understand the concept of loving one another. A true Muslim knows this, a true Muslim practices love, a true Muslim dedicates themselves to the pursuit of peace rather than taking up arms.

As Akram Shibly tells it in the video above, we owe it to each other to practice love and we must ensure that we all have proper knowledge about the world around us. We only need to look at the man who recently died as ''The People's Champ,'' Muhammad Ali. He was celebrated around the world for his character, his philanthropy, and his anti-war stance. He attributed many of his greatest qualities to his devotion to Islam.

'Such sensationalism creates real damage.'

The 'Daily Star on Sunday' has been forced to backtrack on a ''significantly misleading'' story that claimed UK mosques were ''fundraising for terror''.

The paper was ordered by press regulators to print a clarification over a ''failure'' by editors to ''take care over accuracy of the article'' that was criticised for sensationalising and promoting negative attitudes towards Muslims.

The original story had used the single case of an Isis-sympathiser offering to assist a journalist in transferring money abroad, with the source adding ''we get funds from UK brothers from collections at mosques''.

Suit: Muslim Woman Fired 2 Days After San Bernardino Shooting

A Muslim woman in a newly filed federal lawsuit says she was fired from her new job as a receptionist at a Livonia dermatology clinic two days after the mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif.

According to the lawsuit filed today in U.S. District Court in Detroit, the plaintiff — Terry Ali — had only been on the $14-an-hour job for one day at Livonia Dermatology when national news broke about the shootings carried out by a Muslim couple.

The day after the shootings, when she came into work, Ali — who wears a hijab — was assigned to work in a back room putting files away, not in the front greeting clients, which was what she was hired to do, the lawsuit claims.

Why I Oppose Anti-Muslim Hate -- As An Asian American And With Every Part Of My Identity

On December 16, 2015, the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans held a rally to declare that opposing anti-Muslim hate and xenophobia will be one of our highest priorities.

Many Asian American leaders spoke out to condemn anti-Muslim hate and to demonstrate that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders stand for and with our Muslim, Sikh, Arab, and South Asian American brothers and sisters, in part because we have been here before.

As I thought about what I would say, I realized that I oppose anti-Muslim hate not only as an Asian American, but really, with every part of my identity.

These are my remarks.

Bigots Aren't Ashamed of Being Bigots, But Why Aren't They Ashamed of Being Cowards?

Donald Trump believes we should have a "total and complete* shutdown" of all U.S. immigration by Muslims. And the idea got him a standing ovation at a rally today.

OK, I get that bigots feel no shame over being bigots.

But how is it they feel no shame over being cowards?

Obviously, bigots are cowards -- bigotry is born of fear plus ignorance.

Holy Bible Versus Holy Quran 'Dit Is Normaal' Experiment Casts Light On Prejudice

A revealing social experiment in Holland has judged people's responses to Christian Bible passages when they're presented as being part of the Quran.

In an effort to highlight the extent to which we generalise our perceptions of Islam whilst being ignorant to the extremities of Christianity, the duo behind viral Youtube channel Dit Is Normaal hid Old Testament passages in a book labelled "Holy Quran".

Sacha Harland and Alexander Spoor placed a false cover on a newly-purchased bible and read out some of the text's most extreme lines.

"If two men sleep with each other they will both have to be killed," taken from Leviticus 20:13, provoked an especially fearsome reaction from those hearing the passages.

Role Of Parents Towards Their Children In A Society That Does Not Help In Raising Children Properly

Islamic Questions & Answers

A very common problem seen in youth in western countries is that their parents allow them to indulge in some form of haram in the hope that that will stop them from committing worse haram. An example of this is that parents will say that they allow their children to indulge in music in the hope that that will stop them from going out with bad people or leaving their home all together. Parents are afraid that if they enforce the law of Allah in their homes, that their children will leave. What is Islam’s position on this sort of compromise? Some parents also say that they only have the duty to tell their children something is haram, and then their children have to choose for themselves because they are already young adults (i.e. 13 -18 yrs old and unmarried, living at home). Don’t the parents have to forbid haram by all means, or do they just say that is haram and then leave them be? To what extent do parents have to go to forbid their children from haram? Parents also believe that once their children reach the age of puberty they are no longer responsible for their sins or actions, and so say they will have no sin if they advise their children something is haram and then leave them. Is this true? Or do parents always have the responsibility of forbidding their children from haram, and will they be responsible if they see their children doing haram and just leave them after advising them?.

Munir Ahmad Khan: The Real Father of Pakistan's Atomic Bomb

Pakistan's nuclear program that culminated into the fabrication of an atomic weapon was, originally conceived in December 1965, when IAEA nuclear engineer, Munir Ahmad Khan met with the-then-Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in Vienna. Inthat meeting Munir A. Khan informed Bhutto about the status of Indian nuclear program with the apprehension that it could pose a threat to Pakistan's security.

Later Bhutto arranged a meeting of Munir Khan with President Ayub Khan in London. Munir Khan informed the President that the Indian nuclear program was of a weapon production facility and that Pakistan needed a nuclear deterrent for her security, and survival. President Ayub Khan swiftly brushed off the proposal by remarking that "Pakistan was too poor to spend that much money".

My own humble perspective is in brackets

Excerpts of Ahmed Rehab's statements in English:

{My own humble perspective is in brackets - MS}

…The prophet defined a Muslim as one from whose tongue and hand people are ensured peace.

{A Muslim is also one who strives to be an upholder of truth and justice - one who "enjoins the good and forbids the evil."}

…Muslim extremists have tarnished the image of Jihad in the first degree.
