Muslim women particularly have long been categorised as a uniform group. We are presented as a collective, when in actual fact we are not. Not all of us wear abayas. Not all of us wear a hijab. Not all of us speak Arabic

Sabbiyah Pervez

Brown contact lenses, a prosthetic more Asian looking nose, complexion darkening make up, a hijab and some Arabic words. Five things you need to complete your Muslim woman Halloween Costume.

According to a new Channel 4 documentary, this is all that is required to go "undercover as a Muslim." Apparently this reverse White Chicks transformation allows an individual to "walk in the shoes of someone from a different background and what it is like to be a part of the British Pakistani Muslim community rather than just observe as an outsider."

Allow me to break something down for you. Especially for those of you sitting at the back, who suffer from tunnel vision and selective hearing.

Muslims come in all shapes, sizes and colours. A toddler will probably be able to grasp that notion. To be a Muslim, it means you subscribe to a faith - Islam. Islam is a faith that is not limited nor restricted to race or ethnicity. There are roughly around 1.8 billion Muslims in the world. Here in our glorious nation, there are roughly about 2.8 million Muslims, and the largest group is of Pakistani or Bangladeshi heritage. Smaller groups include Turks, Arabs and Africans.

Giving A Voice To The Voiceless: The 'Invisible' Victims Of Islamophobia

A recent study on hate crime revealed an escalation of violence against non-Muslim British men when they are perceived to look 'like a Muslim'

Imran Awan

In August 2016, six teenage boys were arrested in Harlow, Essex, after Polish immigrant Arkadiusz Jóźwik died following a brutal street attack which his brother said began after he was heard speaking Polish on the street.

The decision to leave the EU in some cases emboldened people to express their feelings of hate and "legitimised" the prejudice that they had by empowering them to express and verbalise those feelings.

An escalation of violence

As part of hate crime awareness week, I was in Parliament this week to discuss the impact of such hate crimes upon non-Muslim British men and the rise in trigger events that lead to an escalation of violence against them. Research has shown that victims of hate crime internalise the experience, so much so that it becomes "normalised".

The types of hate they experienced included being targeted in public spaces such as shopping centres, on the train and in car parks.

*Amit, a hate crime victim, told us that:

We Have To Stop Normalising Relentless Islamophobia in Australia

By Rabia Siddique

Terrorised, persecuted, stateless, homeless, and, until recently, without real international support - this is the plight of the Rohingya, a Muslim minority community being forced out of Myanmar.

At the hands of the Myanmar military, more than 80 villages have been burnt, leaving ten thousands of Rohingyas fleeing daily and attempting to cross into a flooded Bangladesh.

Amid perennial media coverage linking Islam to terrorism and radicalisation, little has been known in the west of the persecution of Muslim minority communities like the Rohingya.

Like many displaced Muslims, the vulnerable Rohingya may face fear and resentment when they settle in new communities.

If by chance some of the Rohingya find refuge in our lucky country, there's a strong possibility they will be on the receiving end of the relentless Islamophobia experienced by Muslims, in particular since 11 September 2001.

But just how serious a problem is Islamophobia in Australia?

Oppression of Rohingya Muslims Increased After Suu Kyi Took Power, Rights Group Says

Muslims in Myanmar have been facing more persecution since the election of Aung San Suu Kyi, with restrictions on identity documents and places of worship and the creation of 'Muslim-free' villages, a human rights group said in a report published Tuesday.

Oppression of Islamic communities spreads beyond the north-western Rakhine state, where 90,000 Rohingya - members of a persecuted Muslim minority - have fled violence in recent days, according to the report from the Burma Human Rights Network (BHRN).

"Being a Muslim, I can't go anywhere in my own country," said Kyaw Win, executive director of BHRN, at the report's launch in Bangkok.

Take Away Aung San Suu Kyi's Nobel Peace Prize - She No Longer Deserves It

George Monbiot

Few of us expect much from political leaders: to do otherwise is to invite despair. But to Aung San Suu Kyi we entrusted our hopes. To mention her name was to invoke patience and resilience in the face of suffering, courage and determination in the unyielding struggle for freedom. She was an inspiration to us all.

She has denied the very identity of the people being attacked, asking the US ambassador not to use the term Rohingya

Friends of mine devoted their working lives to the campaign for her release from the many years of detention imposed by the military dictatorship of Myanmar, and for the restoration of democracy. We celebrated when she was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1991; when she was finally released from house arrest in 2010; and when she won the general election in 2015.

Rohingya Muslims: World's Most Persecuted Minority - Myanmar Genocide

YUSUF SELMAN İNANÇ

Recently a cease-fire was declared in Myanmar to facilitate the displacement of Rohingya Muslims. More than 270,000 people have already left their homes, but who are the Rohingyas?

The persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar is one of the worst tragedies on earth right now, but it is also the most overlooked. Rohingya Muslims, one of Myanmar's 135 ethnic groups, are denied the right to citizenship, which in turn deprives them of basic rights like access to healthcare, education and politics.

The decades-long oppression has forced the whole community to live in utter poverty while the Myanmar government has forced Rohingyas from their homes at every opportunity, creating an unprecedented humanitarian tragedy.

Grave Threat to the Survival of the Burmese Muslims

By Saeed Qureshi

According to the International news agencies including the United Nations refugee agency that fleeing from the violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state, more than a quarter of a million (270000) Rohingya Muslim refugees have flooded into Bangladesh in just two weeks. In the wake of this colossal humanitarian upheaval around l,000 people had been killed in the violence over the past two weeks.

Dozens of Rohingya women and children fleeing the violence have drowned while attempting to escape to Bangladesh by boats. As refugees continue to pour across the border, discontent is growing inside Bangladesh at the ongoing violence in their neighboring Rakhine State. Out of the 50 million estimate Burmese population Muslims are about 4 per cent while the Buddhist population forms 87 percent of the total population.

Solidarity Between Rohingya Muslims And Turks Dates Back To WWI, Deputy PM Says

The solidarity between Rohingya Muslims and the Turks dates back to the First World War, when the former provided material and emotional support to the Ottoman Government, a document released by Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Işık showed Friday.

According to a records obtained from the Ottoman archives, Rohingya people sent 1,391 pounds to the Ottomans in 1913 for the relief of the Turkish people wounded in the Balkan Wars, which took place between 1912 and 1913.

The letter, written to Grand Vizier Prince Hilmi Paşa, congratulated the empire for its victory.

Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in the capital of Chechnya to protest the "genocide of Muslims" by Burmese authorities.

More than 400 people have been killed in the last week alone during clashes between the Rohingya Muslim minority and Burma's military, and both sides have accused each other of committing atrocities.

Pictures from the protest in the capital city of Grozny showed up to 30,000 people on the streets, one day after hundreds more appeared at the Burmese embassy in Moscow and other protests were held in Dagestan. On Sunday a small petrol bomb was thrown at the Burmese embassy in Jakarta.

One MP's stunt points to a wider problem in Australian society's attitude towards Muslims

CJ Werleman

Senator Pauline Hanson, Australia's most infamous anti-Muslim politician, walked into the senate chambers in Canberra last week wearing an Islamic burqa in an shameless effort to bring attention to her proposed ban on the religious garment.

By any means of objective analysis, this was a new low for Australia's queen of overt xenophobia and racism. It drew a strong rebuke from the nation's attorney general, George Brandis, who made no attempt to conceal his revulsion towards Hanson, stating: "To ridicule that community, to drive it into a corner, to mock its religious garments is an appalling thing to do and I would ask you to reflect on what you do."

World's Silence On Myanmar Violence Against Rohingyas 'A Portrait Of Shame': Presidential Aide

The international community has the responsibility to come up with a long-term solution to the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar's western state of Rakhine, presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalın said on Friday.

"Turkey will continue to maintain its constructive and determined attitude for a solution," Kalın said in a Twitter post.

He called "the world's silence" in the face of the persecution of Rohingya Muslims by security forces of the southeast Asian country "a portrait of shame."

Turkey is continuing its "intensive efforts and initiatives at every level to end the humanitarian tragedy" in Rakhine, according to the president's aide.

He noted that Turkish humanitarian aid agencies, including the Turkish Red Crescent, Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), and Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), are involved in these efforts.

Muslim women facing Islamophobia challenge the 'victim' stereotype

Hanan Issa, MuslimGirl.com

Muslim women facing Islamophobia challenge the 'victim' stereotype

Islamophobia is real and it is becoming a global issue affecting Muslims regardless of ethnicity, age, profession and social standing. In the UK, anti-Muslim hate crimes have increased fivefold after the terror attacks in Manchester and London, and in the U.S. the number of hate groups that specifically targeted Muslims rose from 34 in 2015 to 101 in 2016.

Last year, the late Member of Parliament (MP) Jo Cox worked on a report that highlighted how Muslim women were more likely to be attacked than Muslim men. Dr. Irene Zempi of Nottingham Trent University, who has done considerable research in the area of gendered Islamophobia, corroborated the statement of Fiyaz Moghul, the founder of Tell MAMA, a project based in the UK that records and analyzes reported anti-Muslim incidents. Moghul suggests that these figures are due to Muslim women in hijab (head covering) or niqab (face veil) being more "visibly Muslim."

As a result, I've noticed a shift in the attitude toward Muslim women who experience Islamophobia. There are times that women are depicted as helpless victims waiting for their proverbial knight in shining armor -who is, more often than not, a white, non-Muslim man or woman. This is not to devalue ally ship–I think there are several times where support from non-Muslims has made a significant impact, such as Tracey Tong on the New York City subway and the men who died defending a Muslim teen girl and her friend in Portland.

The Responsibilities of American Muslim Girls in the Face of White Supremacy

In response to the violence and death caused by the intentional race riots caused by white nationalists, aka White supremacists, aka the KKK, aka neo-nazis, during the "Unite the Right" march in Charlottesville, Va., you might be reflecting upon overwhelming feelings of grief, fear, anger, confusion, or emotional paralysis. These are all incredibly valid and human feelings in response to such perpetual and targeted violence against marginalized communities that we are witnessing, if not experiencing, time and time again. You're right, this isn't okay.

Please, please take care of yourself during this difficult time, whatever that needs to look like for you. We just ask that when you're refortified, please do not use your pain or fear to stay away from actively engaging with the issue at hand. Do not turn away. We can not remain silent, as this directly upholds and actively perpetuates white supremacy and violence conducted under it's name. Do not be *surprised* when such protests turn violent, or even deadly, and please do perpetuate false equivalencies of violence being committed on "many, many sides," as the President has so cowardly, but unequivocally in line with his character, has done.

She Blamed Islamophobia, Then Her Husband Was Arrested For Weapons Smuggling

In April, the Los Angeles Times ran an op-ed complaining that Muslims were being singled out in airports. "Does the 4th Amendment apply to Muslim citizens at LAX?" Lubana Adi, its author, fumed.

Adi, a Syrian, told a sob story about visiting her "aged mother" and two brothers who were refugees in Turkey. Then airport security "groped" under her Hijab and demanded that she empty her purse. They wanted to know why she had visited a border city and where all the money she was carrying had gone.

"President Trump's new security regime wastes yet more of our time and our taxpayer money and shows outright scorn for the spirit of the 4th Amendment," Adi complained.

The Los Angeles Times felt that the story was so important that it needed to be referenced in future pieces as an example of the abuses that Muslims face in this country.

It was a shocking Islamophobic outrage. But now the Times is telling another story.

Islamophpbia: What The Heck Is Going On In Australia?

An Australian senator is under intense criticism for wearing a burqa into the Senate as a way of drawing attention to her crusade to ban the religious dress from the country.

Pauline Hanson is being condemned by the country's attorney general, George Brandis, who urged her to consider that "to ridicule that community, to drive it into a corner, to mock its religious garments is an appalling thing to do. I would ask you to reflect on that."

Penny Wong, the Labor Party's Senate leader, concurred with Brandis' sentiments, telling Hanson that "it is one thing to wear religious dress as a sincere act of faith, there is another to wear it as a stunt here in the chamber.

Mother adopts Islam after son was killed for converting into Islam, changes her name to Jameela

Mother of Faisal, who was hacked to death by a group of RSS workers for converting to Islam in Kodinhi, Malappuram district of Kerala, accepted Islam on Wednesday. She changed her name from Meenakshi to Jameela. The conversion ceremony was held under the leadership of a Sayyid from Maunathul Islam Sabha.

Earlier Faisal's wife and children had converted to Islam and were planning to go to Ponnani to learn basics of the religion. Now, his mother will also accompany them.

Speaking to media, Meenakshi has earlier said that she had given permission to her 32-year-old son who was murdered on 19 November 2016 to convert to Islam.

32-year-old Islam convert hacked to death in Malappuram

MALAPPURAM: A 32-year-old man, who had converted to Islam six months ago, was brutally hacked to death at Farook Nagar in Kodinhi, here, in the wee hours on Saturday.

Faisal P, alias Aneesh Kumar, son of Ananthan Nair, of Kodinhi, was found dead by the roadside at about 4 am by local residents. An auto rickshaw, which he had used for his transportation, was found abandoned by the dead body.

According to the neighbors, Faisal had received threats even from his family members after he accepted Islam.

Faisal had his scalp almost slit open possibly by sharp-edged weapon and his entrails pulled out by the attackers.

The police said that he had converted to Islam about six months ago while he was working in Gulf as a driver. Faisal, who is fondly known as Unni, returned home only four months ago after working in Gulf for a year.

Mosques In The Firing Line - Thoughts Following Quebec Mosque Attack

A horrific, abhorrent gun attack on the Quebec City Islamic Centre that took place late Sunday evening compounds the fear that exists within Muslim communities who feel increasingly threatened and targeted because of their faith.

The attack saw six people die and a further eight people taken to hospital with injuries when gunmen stormed the main building during evening prayers and set upon the 50 or so worshippers that were inside. The attack has been condemned by the Canadian Prime Minister as a "terrorist attack on Muslims" and while the motives are yet unconfirmed it comes at a time of increasing Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred made worse by incendiary political rhetoric.

The attack on the Quebec Mosque is unfortunately not an isolated incident. It is one of a long line of recent attacks that have taken place on Mosques and Islamic Centres across North America and Europe in recent months. On Saturday, only a few hours after Trump's 'Muslim Ban' came into effect, The Islamic Centre of Victoria in Texas was burned to the ground. In December, several attacks on Mosques were reported which included racist graffiti on a Mosque in Scotland, the burning down of an Islamic centre in the Netherlands and a shooting at an Islamic Centre in Switzerland.

This Muslim Mom Was Targeted By Hate. Her Neighbors Refused To Stay Silent

"We will show up, stand up, and stand against any hateful act in our community."

An attempt to spread Islamophobia through an Ohio neighborhood backfired last weekend, resulting instead in numerous acts of love and solidarity.

Ohioans have been rallying around Rawd Saleh, a 41-year-old mother of three from Mason, Ohio. Saleh came home from a weekend away to find out that flyers had been posted in houses in her neighborhood that falsely accused her family of having ties to terrorism. The anonymous "neighborhood terrorist warning" had Saleh's name, address, photo, and even a map showing exactly where her house was located.

"It was an awful feeling for me, to know that someone out there thinks that my life and my children's lives are not valuable at all, someone who would put my name and address out there for anyone who could possibly want to hurt us," Saleh, who has lived in America for 35 years, told The Huffington Post.

Days after President-elect Donald Trump's won the presidency, a Muslim high school teacher in Georgia found a chilling note in her classroom.

"Your headscarf isn't allowed anymore. Why don't you tie it around your neck & hang yourself?"

Mairah Teli, a language arts teacher at Dacula High School in Gwinnett County, uploaded an image of the anonymous note on her Facebook account on Friday. It is unclear who it was written by, or whether the writer was a student or teacher at Teli's school.

The letter was signed "America."

In a Facebook post about the incident, Teli wrote that she decided to share the note online to raise awareness how the political climate is affecting American Muslims.

Nearly 5,000 mourners packed into a hockey arena in Montreal's Olympic park for the funeral, while many more across Canada watched it on television.

For many in this mostly secular nation, the ceremony was their first glimpse of traditional Muslim funeral rites.

Alexandre Bissonnette: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Alexandre Bissonnette has been accused of killing six people and wounding eight others in a "barbaric" massacre Sunday night at a Quebec City mosque, TVA News reports.

The 27-year-old entered the Centre Culturel Islamique de Quebec and opened fire with a rifle, shooting members of the mosque as they prayed, police and witnesses say.

He is in police custody and was being questioned Monday morning. He has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder, the Toronto Star reports.

Friends and those who knew him online said he had extreme political beliefs, but was not known to be violent. Eric Debroise said he called police after the shooting and told them Bissonnette is "very right and (an) ultra nationalist white supremacist," the French-language newspaper Le Journal de Quebec reports. "He really liked Trump and had a permanent discontent with the left."

Debroise said Bissonnette had cut ties with many friends recently, the newspaper reports. Bissonnette's family told the newspaper they believe he fell under the influence of someone.

A second man, Mohamed el Khadir, a Moroccan immigrant also called Mohamed Belkhadir, was previously identified by authorities as a suspect. He was taken into custody near the mosque and questioned, but Quebec Provincial Police said in a tweet Monday afternoon that he is no longer considered to be a suspect. He is now being called a witness.

Mairah Teli, a language arts teacher at Dacula High School in Gwinnett County, uploaded an image of the anonymous note on her Facebook account on Friday. It is unclear who it was written by, or whether the writer was a student or teacher at Teli's school.

Islamophobic hate crime: is it getting worse?

From online abuse to fire bombs thrown at mosques, there has been a spike in anti-Muslim attacks. While many incidents are not reported to the police, groups such as the Tell Mama project paint a worrying picture of rising Islamophobia and violence

"I don't really want to go out now," Rizwan Ali says anxiously. "If I needed something I used to just go to the shops, but I've been staying in." On 24 May the father of four had been to Friday prayers at his local mosque. On his way home he popped into Pound Stretcher to look at gardening equipment. As he browsed he noticed another customer staring at him.

"He was looking at me, as though I had done something," Ali (not his real name), explains. "Then he started shouting: 'You are a Muslim, you are a soldier killer.' I was shocked and scared. It was very upsetting. I moved to the front of the shop, but he kept following me."

Islamophobia, Anti-Immigrant Sentiment On The Rise In Germany

More than 40 percent of Germans surveyed believe Muslims should be forbidden from coming into the country.

Islamophobia has risen markedly in Germany, a study published on Wednesday showed, underscoring the tensions simmering in German society after more than one million migrants, mostly Muslims, arrived last year.

Every second respondent in the study of 2,420 people said they sometimes felt like a foreigner in their own country due to the many Muslims here, up from 43 percent in 2014 and 30.2 percent in 2009.

The number of people who believe Muslims should be forbidden from coming to Germany has also risen, the study showed, and now stands at just above 40 percent, up from about a fifth in 2009.

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Leipzig in co-operation with the Heinrich Boell Foundation, the Rosa-Luxemburg Foundation and the Otto-Brenner foundation.

Ice Cream Parlor Responds Perfectly To Anti-Muslim Bigotry

''You can give somebody else your business.''

As a Muslim woman who wears the headscarf in America, 22-year-old Nura Takkish says she expects to be the target of Islamophobia just not when she and her friends are enjoying ice cream at their neighborhood ice cream parlor.

Takkish was sitting with two of her friends at Andrew's Ice Cream and Dessert in Orange County, California, on Monday, May 23, when they noticed a commotion at the counter. A customer was being asked to leave for saying ''racist and nasty things,'' the shop's baker, Jessie Noah, later told The Huffington Post.

Takkish's friend Malaak Ammari started to record the incident on her phone.
